WHAT: You are invited to join Central Union Mission as we distribute Safeway’s Feast of Sharing food boxes and gift bags to food recipient families at the Family Ministry Center and to people experiencing homelessness and poverty on the street outside the Mission shelter. Feast of Sharing meal boxes contain a turkey sandwich, potato salad, an oatmeal cranberry cookie, an apple and a beverage. Free gift bags of warm winter accessories and PPE are also available. The distributions are socially distanced and take place outside.
WHEN: Wednesday, November 25, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Family Ministry Center and Thursday, November 26, from 11:00 to 1:00 pm at the shelter parking lot, while supplies last
WHERE: Family Ministry Center, 3194 Bladensburg Rd., NE, Washington, DC 20018. The entrance is at the back of the building; the driveway is next to Popeye’s. Central Union Mission Shelter, 65 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001.
WHO: The Family Ministry Center serves seniors on fixed incomes and families affected by unemployment, housing insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic. The shelter distribution is first-come, first-served to anyone in need.
WHY: According to Mission President & CEO Joe Mettimano, “On a typical Thanksgiving, the shelter opens its doors to the community for a free holiday meal, but because of the pandemic, the shelter must remain closed to non-residents. That’s why we’re so grateful to Safeway for donating these Feast of Sharing meals. We’ll be able to share some Thanksgiving turkey with our neighbors after all, “explained Mission President & CEO Joseph Mettimano. Local Safeway stores, the Safeway Foundation and the Albertsons Companies Foundation have contributed over $48,000 to Central Union Mission this year providing emergency relief for hungry families and children.
